This comprehensive study of the norms that govern Spanish and English is designed for those who wish to increase their mastery of the phonemic, orthographic, morphological, and syntactic structures of both these languages. Unlike conventional grammars, this work pays special attention to those areas of grammar that cause the most difficulty to English-speakers learning Spanish as well as to Spanish-speakers learning English. There is also a workbook containing a well-integrated series of exercises and tests that are aligned with the text and help learners assimilate the material and extend their knowledge. Both the text and workbook are geared to universities and their libraries in the United States, England, Spain, and Spanish America that offer Baccalaureate or M.A. programs in Spanish. Both works could be used as ancillary materials to those teaching in bilingual programs, to translators and interpreters, and to those students interested in bilingualism and applied linguistics. A diferencia de las gramáticas convencionales, este texto presta especial atención a las áreas de la gramática que causan los mayores problemas tanto para el estudiante anglosajón que quiera aprender el español como para el hispanohablante que quiera aprender el inglés. El Cuaderno de Práctica contiene una serie integrada de ejercicios y pruebas que están alineados con el texto y que le ayudarán al estudiante a asimilar el material. Carmelo Gariano (1922-2004) led a wide-ranging career that included advanced degrees from the University of Catania and University of Buenos Aires, as well as a doctorate from the University of Chicago. He taught at several institutions, in particular, at California State University-Northridge, where he was selected as statewide Outstanding Professor. He published eighteen books of both fiction and nonfiction, authored numerous scholarly articles and other creative endeavors, and was an enthusiastic and inspirational speaker and teacher. Brian Castronovo (1949- ) received his M.A. degree in Spanish from Middlebury College and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has spent most of his career teaching Spanish linguistics at California State University-Northridge, where he received the Distinguished Teaching Award. He has published several scholarly articles in journals such as Hispania, Hispanic Linguistics, and the Boletín de la Real Academia Española. He is chair of the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures and is Vice-President of the California State University Foreign Language Council.
