Close to the Eyes
The Portraits of Xiao Hui Wang
With texts by Tilman Spengler and Xiao Hui Wang
Xiao Hui Wang ’s portraits are of a rare psychological intensity. A world away from celebrity portraiture, they focus not so much on their subjects ’social or material standing but on their individuality —in particular on their eyes. Close to the Eyes presents seventy of the photographer ’s most powerful...
Wang photographs normal people encountered in everyday situations in streets, cafes or in their homes. Her subjects are women, men, and children of different ages, professions, and social backgrounds. Each portrait reveals an individual existence, abstracted from environment, culture, and nationality.
Born in Tianjin near Beijing in 1957, Xiao Hui Wang studied architecture in Shanghai, and initially worked for several years as a successful architect and lecturer. In recent years she has concentrated on her photography, and her work has appeared in books and numerous exhibitions.
