9783822831564: Japanese Cinema

Synopsis

Exploring the work of the greatest Japanese filmmakers

Until recently, the western world has viewed Japanese cinema through a very narrow prism. For years, Westerners interested in Japanese film had to content themselves with the collected works of Akira Kurosawa, a spotty sampling of films by Kenji Mizoguchi and Yasujiro Ozu, gobs of anime, and badly dubbed monster movies. Many great filmmakers like Mikio Naruse and Keisuke Kinoshita have remained unknown in the West, and Japanese musicals and comedies are hardly known outside Asia. This volume sets the record straight, illustrating an in-depth history of Japanese cinema with vivid posters and stunning photography.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 1st Edition/1st Printing hardcover SIGNED by series editor, Paul Duncan. Duncan has written many books on film and has worked extensively as a publisher and editor. His signature appears in gold marker on a black background without inscription on the first free endpage and is accompanied by a nifty little doodle as well. The book includes hundreds of stills from Japanese films and an informative text by Stuart Galbraith IV. The book's hinges are secure and it does not lean. Pages are clean, bright and undamaged. The book's exterior is also clean. The upper right corner of the front cover and upper left corner of the back cover are bumped. Very little wear otherwise. The dust jacket is not price-clipped and is completely clean. It shows slight wear to top and bottom edges in a few spots. No holes, chips or tears. Book and dust jacket will be bubble-wrapped and shipped in a sturdy box to ensure safe transit. This is a heavy book that will require extra funds for shipment outside of the United States.
