Synopsis
L'ample collection de gravures et lithographies érotiques présentées dans cet ouvrage provient principalement de la France de la Monarchie de juillet (1830-1848). Le règne de Louis Philippe, le roi citoyen, fut relativement calme et paisible, et se caractérise par la montée de la bourgeoisie, la prospérité économique et une censure étonnamment tolérante. C'est aussi l'époque de l'expansion en France d'une nouvelle technique, la lithographie, née dans une Allemagne ne jouissant pas d'un climat culturel aussi libéral qu'en France. En tant que technique moderne et économique de reproduction en masse d'images, la lithographie rendit l'art accessible au grand public pour la première fois. Ces facteurs, s'ajoutant à un climat intellectuel plutôt libre-penseur - qui permit à des philosophes des sciences humaines comme Saint-Simon de trouver de nombreux adeptes, aux journaux d'imprimer des caricatures aussi mordantes que celles d'un Daumier, et aux artistes de mener une vie ouvertement bohème - se combinèrent pour créer l'atmosphère dans laquelle put s'épanouir l'art érotique rassemblé dans ce livre. Les illustrations de cet ouvrage "Romantique" font partie de la célèbre collection privée d'art érotique de Hans-Jürgen Döpp, caractérisée par sa rareté, dans les deux sens du en quantité comme en qualité. La qualité hautement artistique et l'attrait esthétique de ces images les éloignent aussi bien de la pure pornographie que d'une documentation historique désuète. Pour l'oeil moderne, elles sont plus plaisantes dans leur composition et leur réalisation qu'elles ne sont excitantes pour les sens et l'humour inhérent à la plupart des oeuvres présentées ici est aussi Frais qu'il l'était il y a 170 ans. »
