Surimono (literally "printed object") are privately published prints inscribed with a dedication and/or poem(s) that touch upon everyday themes. This catalogue accompanied an exhibition of the same name at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Included in the catalogue are 116 colour and 40 black-and-white illustrations of prints drawn from the Rijksmuseum collection. The book also contains in-depth essays by Charlotte van Rappard-Boon and Lee Bruschke-Johnson that discuss the history of surimono and the subjects depicted in the prints, which include seasonal references and classical themes. The catalogue contains English translations of all the poems that appear on the prints. This publication is not just an exhibition catalogue, but is also an important reference work in the study of surimono.

Very good condition overall.; Catalogue from the exhibition Surimono - poezie & beeld in de Japanse prent, held at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam from 13 January 2001 to 1 April 2001.;"Some art collectors are in the enviable position of being ahead of their time - this allows them to choose freely from works they value before a larger group discovers them. J.A. Bierens de Haan was one such collector who bequeathed his extensive collection of surimono prints to the Rijksmuseum when he died in 1958. Surimono did not attract much attention for a considerable period ands he was able to bring together a beautiful collection of Japanese 'celebratory' prints. These very carefully-printed, colour woodcuts circulated almost exclusively amongst poetry clubs and enthusiasts in the first half of the 19th century, and were not made for the general market. It is thanks to this bequest that the Rijksmuseum is now in possession of an important collection of surimono created by such luminaries as Hokusai, Hokkei, Shunnman and Gakutei. Recently the collection was greatly expanded by a generous donation from J.H.W. Goslings, who started collecting surimono and erotic Japanese prints at the beginning of the 1980s. His gracious gesture was the inspiration for this exhibition, which also includes a number of prints from the collection Maartje Draak bequeathed to the Vereniging van Vrienden van Aziatishche Kunst (1995). Our intention is to present a selection from the Rijksmuseum's collection of more than 700 prints to a wider public. The poetic element is vital to surimono - the images were actually created in response to one or more verses written by members of poetry clubs - and we have therefore attempted to provide translations of the poems that appear on the prints, a difficult undertaking that is further complicated by the ambiguity and complexity of the poems. The translations included in this catalogue were produced with the assistance of a group of specialists in the field, to whom we are especially grateful, also for their suggestions which have improved the text in all sorts of ways." excerpt from the preface by Ronald de Leeuw, Director General, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
