Two volumes of Laurent Heister's impressive work of surgical history, illustrated with forty folding plates depicting surgical procedures and tools. The first two volumes only of the four volume second French language translation of this work, translated by M. Paul. First published in Germany in Latin, this is the second French translation, first published in French the year prior. A popular work by German anatomist, surgeon and botanist Lorenz Heister, the founder of scientific surgery in Germany and a professor of anatomy. In 1718, he coined the word "tracheotomy", and he is also credited as the first physician to perform a post-mortem section of appendicitis. Illustrated with a frontispiece to and eighteen plates to volume I, and twenty-two plates to volume II.
