Originally published in 1829, the story is set in the latter years of Louis XIII's reign when the eponymous Cardinal Richelieu was the French king's chief minister. Both volumes have a page of publisher's adverts before the title page. In the original binding. Externally very smart, with a mark to the rear board of volume I, and some rubbing at the joint on the front board of volume II. A little bumping to the head and tail of the spine and some marginal wear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound.
