This 1894 antique colour map of the Middle East, focusing on Palestine, Jerusalem, and Damascus, serves as a historical route and rail map chart. Palestine, known in Arabic as Filast?n or Falast?n and in Hebrew as Eretz Israel, encompasses the region between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River, alongside adjacent lands to the east and south, with varied definitions over millennia. Historically, the land west of the Jordan River was referred to as the "land of Canaan" during periods of Egyptian influence. Following the split of the United Monarchy, the southern part became the Kingdom of Judah and the northern part the Kingdom of Israel. The term "Palestine" originates from the Philistines, an ancient ethnic group who dwelled along the southern coast, although their distinct identity waned by the Assyrian period. The Greek form "Palaistinêi," used by Herodotus in the 5th century BC, eventually led to the English term "Palestine." The inset of Jerusalem on the map includes an index of places and sites. Measuring approximately 12 x 9 1/2 inches, this antique map is in excellent condition, with German text, beautiful detail, Centerfold and is blank on the back. Seller Inventory # 6976
