Black and white illustrations. [From Preface] This book is a History of The Hartford Theological Seminary and not of The Hartford Seminary Foundation. It is the story of one of the three Schools which make up the Foundation. In 1935 The Hartford School of Religious Education will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of its founding and in 1936 The Kennedy School of Missions will complete twenty-five years of service, and in each case there will be a suitable presentation of the School's history. The relations of the three Schools are such that the recent story of the Seminary can not be presented without frequent references to the two other Schools. It has been necessary therefore to describe in brief outline the beginnings and development of The School of Religious Education and The Kennedy School of Missions. . . In writing the History, use has been made of official material as far as possible. This includes the records of the Pastoral Union and of the Board of Trustees. The Seminary Library is rich in manuscript material, especially in letters. These letters have been freely used. Unless otherwise noted the letters quoted are in the manuscript collection of the Library. There is much material also in the religious magazines, especially for the earlier years. In presenting the discussions of the earlier period, the controversialists have been allowed to speak quite at length. This plan has been deliberately followed because it is believed be more nearly just to the parties concerned. Official documents and creeds have also been presented quite fully, because they cannot be abbreviated in justice to those who wrote them. Needless to say, there is no attempt to prove who was "wrong" and who was "right" in these forgotten controversies . . . Contents include: The Religious Background; The Taylor-Tyler Controversy; The Formation of the Pastoral Union; Founding the Seminary; Student Life at East Windsor Hill; Closing Years at East Windsor Hill; The Beginnings of the Library; The Seminary at Prospect Street; The Early Years at Hosmer Hall; The Presidency of Dr. Hartranft; Growth of the Library; The School of Religious Education; The Coming of President Mackenzie; The New Creed; The Foundation; The Seminary and the World War; The Building Era; On the New Campus; Appendix A. Trustees 1833-1934; Appendix B. Faculty 1833-1934; Index.
