Chosen as FDR's fourth-term vice president for his well-praised work ethic, good judgment, and lack of enemies, Harry S. Truman was the prototypical ordinary man. That is, until he was shockingly thrust in over his head after FDR's sudden death. The first four months of Truman's administration saw the founding of the United Nations, the fall of Berlin, victory at Okinawa, firebombings in Tokyo, the first atomic explosion, the Nazi surrender, the liberation of concentration camps, the mass starvation in Europe, the Potsdam Conference, the controversial decision to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the surrender of imperial Japan, and finally, the end of World War II and the rise of the Cold War. No other president had ever faced so much in such a short period of time. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 315 pages; Signed by Author.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Autographed by President Harry Truman. This is a Pennsylvania Railroad Menu -- cardstock cover, folded with a single folded sheet inside with menu -- held together with white cord with tassel. The front cover is embossed with Presidential Eagle in gold, the words "Trip of The President to the Army-Navy Football Game, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. December 2, 1950" with the Pennsylvania Railroad logo beneath. President Truman has signed boldly on the front, just beneath the eagle. Inside, the menu includes full Breakfast for $1.65 and A La Carte items individually priced (Oatmeal 40 cents, coffee 30 cents) The white cord with tassel is clean on the inside, a bit faded and dusty on the part that dangles out. Measures 5 x 7 inches. The white paper is a little dusty, but overall very good condition. Truman rode the special train up from Washington to Philadelphia for the game -- there are some great archived photos of him doing the coin toss - and great to see a time when the President could sit in the front row surrounded by friends and family and the regular crowds, even though according to news reports at the time, an assassination attempt had been thwarted just a few weeks earlier. There were 100,000 fans in attendance. Truman sat on the Army side for one half and the Navy side for the other. Navy won 14-2. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it s an ABE Stock Photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book. Signed by Author(s).
