Pais was a physicist best known for his books on the history of modern physics including biographies on Einstein, Oppenheimer, and Dirac. In Pais' work "A Tale of Two Continents" (p.234) he describes this work as follows: "As a result of the Shelter Island meeting, interest in quantum electrodynamics had increased in wide circles. Oppenheimer and Wheeler suggested that I edit a collection of reprints of earlier papers on the subject, and supply a detailed introductory essay. As a result, on December 5, 1947, I signed a contract with Princeton University Press for a book to be delivered on or before the first of March 1948. That book never appeared. My introductory essays was printed by the Press as a seperate pamphlet, however. I am glad to report that it is still widely read". OCLC # 488747407.
