Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the unsettling history of the Ku Klux Klan, tracing its resurgence and influence in 20th-century American politics, particularly during the 1920s. The author explores the Klan's origins, its hierarchical structure, and the motivations of those who joined its ranks, ranging from opportunistic businessmen and politicians to disenchanted citizens yearning for a return to traditional values. The narrative unveils the Klan's expansion beyond its Southern roots, revealing its presence in states like Indiana, Ohio, and California, where it adapted its message to exploit local prejudices. Despite its attempts at reform and claims of promoting Americanism, the Klan's activities, often marked by violence and intimidation, ultimately generated widespread public opposition and led to its decline. This book offers a chilling yet essential examination of a dark chapter in American history, providing insights into the factors that fueled the Klan's rise and the dangers of unchecked extremism. By understanding the Klan's appeal and tactics, we can better recognize and combat similar threats to our democratic values in any era. It is not so much . the brutalities and excesses of the Ku Klux Klan or even that [ Rice ] measures the intelligence of those who led the cross-burners as wanting; . What is frightening is the amount of practical actioin the successors to the Klan have learned from it. They have learned not only from the Klan's mistakes but from the Klan's successes - Introduction.

This volume was among several dozen books from Temple Rice Hollcroft's library that we were lucky enough to purchase at auction in New Jersey. Several of the books contain his ink stamp, signature, or a presentation inscription to him. Unfortunately, this volume does not have those signs of his ownership. [But please check our inventory for several others that do]. The American mathematician Temple Rice Hollcroft (1889 - 1967) received B.S. in 1912 and A.B. in 1914 from Hanover College and then A.M. in 1915 from the University of Kentucky. He received his Ph.D. in 1917 from Cornell University under Virgil Snyder. Hollcroft was a mathematics professor at Wells College from 1918 to 1954, from which he retired as professor emeritus. Hollcroft served for 14 years as Associate Secretary of the American Mathematical Society. In 1932 in Zurich he was an Invited Speaker of the International Congress of Mathematician (ICM). His subject was THE GENERAL WEB OF SURFACES AND THE SPACE INVOLUTION DEFINED BY IT. Being invited to talk at the ICM has been called "the equivalent of induction to a hall of fame." - from Wikipedia.
