Condition: Nuevo. 112 pp. Cuando los autores de este libro nos propusimos escribirlo lo hicimos pensando que resumir y aportar nuestros cuarenta años de experiencia, estudio, investigación y trabajo en el síndrome de Down (S.D.) podría ser especialmente útil y provechoso para las personas con S.D., para sus padres y hermanos, para las personas que conviven con ellos y muy especialmente para los futuros profesionales (médicos, psicólogos, pedagogos, logopedas, psicomotricistas, fisioterapeutas, maestros ) que actualmente se preparan en las Universidades para trabajar el día de mañana con y para las personas con S.D. de los países de habla hispana. Está dividido en dos bloques claramente diferenciados: En los capítulos II y III, que constituyen el primer bloque, se abordan y explican los avances que se produjeron al final del siglo XX y principios del XXI en genética molecular, que permitieron diferenciar otros muchos síndromes de origen genético que cursan también con hándicap cognitivo y en particular definir la especificidad física, fisiológica y neurocomportamental del S.D. en temas tan importantes como la cognición, la memoria, el lenguaje, etc. Asimismo se aborda un tema específico del S.D.: la tendencia general a que entorno a los 40 años aparezca un envejecimiento prematuro (polimorfo) (Ylieff, 2003), que no se trata de una demencia, y que no deberá confundirse tampoco con la patología del Alzheimer (monomorfa) que afecta al 20% de las personas con S.D. mayores de 40 años y a un 40% de las que ya han cumplido 50.? El segundo bloque (capítulos IV y V) aborda por una parte el seguimiento médico longitudinal de las personas con S.D. que permite prevenir, analizar y resolver los problemas médicos que puntualmente vayan apareciendo en ellas y que están bien delimitados en los programas de salud para las personas con S.D. , y por otra parte la evaluación neuropsicológica con el objetivo de concretar y medir las dificultades cognitivas y aplicar las técnicas más adecuadas para su óptimo aprovechamiento y, en lo posible, su recuperación. En el capítulo V se destaca la importancia y eficacia de la ATENCIÓN TEMPRANA, lo más precoz posible, y basada en la colaboración interdisciplinar de los especialistas en diferentes disciplinas científicas conceptuales, con el objetivo de restituir un genotipo lo más cercano posible de la normalidad. Esto afecta al lenguaje y al habla, a la memoria, a la cognición cuantitativa, con la ayuda, cada vez más potente de la farmacoterapia cognitiva.
