Since the mid-1920s Swedish glass has been synonymous with excellence in design and craftsmanship; indeed, it was one of the applied arts that helped build the reputation of Swedish sensibility and design in the Scandinavian modern movement. This beautifully photographed exhibit catalogue presents 157 objects from the period of intense development in Swedish glass between the world wars, including domestic glassware, stemware, scent bottles, light fixtures, and superb pieces by artists like Edward Hald and Simon Gate, along with some of Gate's sensuous, finely detailed sketches for etching into the glass. The book also depicts the glassmakers and their factories, in more than 100 archival photos. The first English-language publication to deal with Swedish glass of this period, it includes essays by Swedish and American scholars. Meticulously detailed descriptions of the objects take pains to credit the blowers and engravers as well as the artists who created each design. A comprehensive glossary clarifies glassware terminology and the book includes abbreviated histories of the major Swedish glassworks.
