This edition is based on the Constance Garnett translation originally published in 1901 and in print ever since.Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) was a Russian author who wrote novels and plays, and is widely considered one of the greatest authors of all time. His works include War and Peace, Anna Karenina, and The Death of Ivan Ilyich. Tolstoy was born in the Tula Province of Russia, and was educated at the University of Kazan. After graduating, he worked as a teacher and in the army before embarking on his writing career. His first published work was Childhood, a semi-autobiographical novel, in 1852. Tolstoy is known for his philosophical and spiritual outlook. His works often explore questions of morality, justice, and the meaning of life. His later works focus on religious issues, such as non-violence, and his essays on Christianity and anarchism had a profound influence on Mahatma Gandhi and other political activists. In addition to his literary career, Tolstoy was a public figure who actively promoted social reform. He sought to improve the conditions of peasants and the working class, and proposed a system of education and land reform. He also became a vocal advocate of vegetarianism and animal rights. Tolstoy's works have been translated into more than 50 languages, and remain popular today. His influence in literature, politics, and philosophy continues to be felt around the world. Stated First Modern Library Edition COPYRIGHT PG, BK VG- / GOOD- DJ, 1ST in the first issue, 200-title dust jacket. , here is some minor staining. The DJ, which is good only, has about one inch of chipping on the top and bottom of the spine, a small stain the front panel and a vertical chip on the spine. There a few tears elsewhere on the front and back panels. Obviously, this is not that good a DJ, but it is still very rare for a first of this issue ,a philosophical study, and a celebration of the Russian spirit. Tolstoy's genius is seen clearly in the multitude of characters in this massive chronicle - all of them fully realized and equally memorable. Out of this complex narrative emerges a profound examination of the individual's place in the historical process.

Add to basketTaschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828-1910) commonly referred to in English as Leo Tolstoy, was a Russian writer - novelist, essayist, dramatist and philosopher - as well as pacifist Christian anarchist and educational reformer. He was the most influential member of the aristocratic Tolstoy family. His first publications were three autobiographical novels, Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth (1852-1856). They tell of a rich landowner's son and his slow realization of the differences between him and his peasants. As a fiction writer Tolstoy is widely regarded as one of the greatest of all novelists, particularly noted for his masterpieces War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1877). In their scope, breadth and realistic depiction of 19th-century Russian life, the two books stand at the peak of realist fiction.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition in English. A true first printing of the first translation into English, published in 1913. This was the third volume of Dostoevsky's works translated by Constance Garnett between 1912 and 1920, and notably not one of the titles translated into English by Frederick Whishaw in the 1880s. Published as Volume III of the Novels of Fyodor Dostoevsky. ***A very good copy in scarlet cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine and a blind-stamped device on the front board. The gilt has oxidised on the spine, which is also somewhat dulled. The boards have some marks and rubbing commensurate with age and handling, but there is virtually no wear to the cloth at all - just some light creasing to the head and tail of the spine, which is to be expected. Corners quite sharp without much wear to the cloth. There are some minor marks to the cloth at the top edge of the front board. The top edge of the page block is just slightly dusty and darkened. There is none of the usual foxing to the edges of the page block, and the binding is tight and square. Internally the book is very good, with just a pencil inscription to the front free endpaper. No splitting to the fragile binding. Some foxing to the endpapers, and a little sporadic foxing to the first and last few pages, but the interior pages are clean, with no significant creases or tears. The book is printed on very thin paper, and some of the gatherings remain uncut. Spine tight. No dustwrapper. ***195mm x 135mm. 637 pages. ***'Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky or Fyódor Mikháylovich Dostoyévskiy (11 Nov 1821 - 9 Feb 1881), sometimes transliterated as Dostoyevsky, was a Russian novelist, short story writer, essayist and journalist. Dostoevsky's literary works explore the human condition in the troubled political, social, and spiritual atmospheres of 19th-century Russia, and engage with a variety of philosophical and religious themes. His most acclaimed novels include "Crime and Punishment" (1866), "The Idiot" (1869), "Demons" or "The Possessed" (1872), and "The Brothers Karamazov" (1880). His 1864 novella, "Notes from Underground", is considered to be one of the first works of existentialist literature. Numerous literary critics rate him as one of the greatest novelists in all of world literature, as many of his works are considered highly influential masterpieces.' ***'"The Possessed", also known as "Demons", or "The Devils", was first published in Russian in serial form in The Russian Messenger between 1871 and 1872, and in book form in 1872 as Bésy. It is considered one of the four masterworks written by Dostoevsky after his return from Siberian exile. ***'Constance Clara Garnett (née Black; 19 Dec 1861 - 17 Dec 1946) was an English translator of nineteenth-century Russian literature. She was the first English translator to render numerous volumes of Anton Chekhov's work into English and the first to translate almost all of Fyodor Dostoevsky's fiction into English. She also rendered works by Ivan Turgenev, Leo Tolstoy, Nikolai Gogol, Ivan Goncharov, Alexander Ostrovsky, and Alexander Herzen into English. Altogether, she translated 71 volumes of Russian literature, many of which are still in print today, and her translations received acclaim from numerous critics and authors, including Joseph Conrad and D. H. Lawrence. Ernest Hemingway admired her translations of Fyodor Dostoevsky and once told a friend that he was unable to read through Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace "until I got the Constance Garnett translation."' Secure ship w/track #. His two most famous works, the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are acknowledged as two of the greatest novels of all time and a pinnacle of realist fiction. Many consider Tolstoy to have been one of the world's greatest novelists. Tolstoy is equally known for his complicated and paradoxical persona and for his extreme moralistic and ascetic views, which he adopted after a moral crisis and spiritual awakening in the 1870s, after which he also became noted as a moral thinker and social reformer. Anna is a sophisticated woman who abandons her empty existence as the wife of Karenin and turns to Count Vronsky to fulfil her passionate nature - with tragic consequences. Levin is a reflection of Tolstoy himself, often expressing the author's own views and convictions. War and Peace broadly focuses on Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812 and follows three of the most well-known characters in literature: Pierre Bezukhov, the illegitimate son of a count who is fighting for his inheritance and yearning for spiritual fulfillment; Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, who leaves his family behind to fight in the war against Napoleon; and Natasha Rostov, the beautiful young daughter of a nobleman who intrigues both men. As Napoleon's army invades, Tolstoy brilliantly follows characters from diverse backgroundspeasants and nobility, civilians and soldiersas they struggle with the problems unique to their era, their history, and their culture. And as the novel progresses, these characters transcend their specificity, becoming some of the most movingand humanfigures in world literature.
