This is a very rare Special Edition of the Palawan Press publication "A Private Car, An Account Of The Bristol" by L J K Setright. The book was published in 1998 as a two volume Limited Edition set of 1000 copies, 900 of which were Standard Editions and 100 Special Editions. The Special Editions were SIGNED by LJK Setright and were leather bound with an aluminium plaque carrying the number of the book. The Special Editions, which are sold out were numbered from 400 to 498 and 603 - this being Number 480. The Special Editions, are encased in a drop back Solander box with the Bristol logo inset on the front and silver gilt titles to the front and spine. A photograph of a Bristol Beaufighter Convertible, mounted on a lightweight metal, is enclosed in the solander box. The book is essentially an account of all the cars which have borne the Bristol name. The book is in two volumes - The Image and The Word. In The Image specially commissioned photography was taken of 40 cars while other illustrations include trams, aircraft and other products associated with the company. In The Word, Setright deals with all the cars, including technical assessments and driving impressions, the background history of the British Aeroplane Company, the contribution made by BMW, other makes of cars which used the Bristol engine, the association with Chrysler and design projects which failed to reach production, amongst other matters. The original goal was to update Stanley Sedgwick's 1978 work however the sheer volume of new information carried the project far beyond the initial concept.This included tracing the existence and ownership of 204 of the 208 models produced. Only 358 copies of the book were printed of which 150 were Standard Editions and the balance of 208 were Owners' Editions. This copy was recently found in as new condition in its slipcase, both bound in black buckram with gold foil blocking to the front and spine.
