Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 1890. Boston: D. Lothrop Co. 8vo. Hardcover. Illustrated. First edition. Bound in green cloth with pictorial cover. Covers are bright and clean. There is a water stain affecting the upper corner of the first 12 pages. Spine lettering slightly faded.
No Binding. Condition: Good. This old sepia photograph has a certain air of comfortable mystery. The man sits in his easy chair, reading a book next to a large stone fireplace. it shure looks like a cabin in the Adirondacks; is it his den - his private sanctum? What is he reading with such calm attention? Who was he? I can't help feeling that he looks familiar . that I should know who he was. But . no . his identity is lost to time. I can see what I think may be an old Victrola, standing in the corner beyond the man's chair. Also behind him is what seems to be the shade of a floor lamp in an Arts and Crafts style. The photograph, dating, I think, from circa 1920 is a black-and-white snapshot, with an almost, but not quite sepia tone, measuring 5 3/4" x 3 1/2". The man is not identified and no place is mentioned, but the photograph was found in Kirkland NY (in the Utica area ). ******************************** CONDITION The photograph has some silvering just above and below the man (which adds a aura of time and mystery) - It seems that the original photo may have been over-exposed (from taking the picture facing an open window, through which streams bright daylight. There is a small crease to the bottom right corner, and a pronounced vertical curvature, else the photo is nicely preserved with but mild weathering and surface rub. This is the original photograph, not a modern reproduction. It s a mystery.

DIY. ecology. "I've never met a more remarkable woman than Anne LaBastille, and her book is every bit as remarkable as the author herself." ~ Les Line, Editor, Audubon Magazine. Many have dreamed of building a cabin in the wilderness and living there alone in the solitude of a region that is far from civilization. Here is the unusual story of a young wildlife ecologist who has done just that. When her marriage ended in divorce, Anne LaBastille bought twenty~two acres of virgin forest on a lonely lake in New York State's vast Adirondack Park, and there built the log cabin that has been her home ever since. Woodswoman is a sensitive account of her adventures in North Woods living and of the wild animals, plants and people she knows so intimately. Her "back yard" is the six million acres of cloud~splitting high peaks, sunny beaver meadows, somber spruce forests, and clear lakes and streams of the forever~wild Adirondack State Park, the largest wilderness tract east of the Mississippi. Her bark~walled cabin is snug but primitive. In winter she chops a hole in the lake ice for water, and hauls and splits her own firewood; with no road to the cabin, all travel must be by boat, canoe, snowmobile, or on foot. Can a young woman find a rewarding life under such conditions, shouldering work and risking dangers usually faced only by woodsmen? In the wilderness, adventure is never far away. Anne LaBastille's years at Black Bear Lake have had their share of narrow escapes and near disasters, especially during the implacable cold of winter in the North Woods. But despite hardships and dangers, Anne LaBastille has found romance and professional fulfillment on her lake in the Adirondacks. In her chronicle of life in the wilderness, she shares with her reader moments of rare beauty and an underlying warmth~a spirit of adventure that is both a challenge and a revelation. "The ecologist author recounts the circumstances, conditions, and rewards of her life in an isolated log cabin in New York State's Adirondack wilderness." ABOUT THE AUTHOR: "Anne LaBastille, author of Woodswoman, Beyond Black Bear Lake, Woodswoman III, Woodswoman IV, Assignment:Wildlife, and Women of the Wilderness, is a noted ecologist as well. She has been honored by the National Wildlife Federation and the Explorers Club for her pioneering work in wildlife ecology both in the United States and in Guatemala. Though she realized the need to buy lumber and hire help for the first, she built her second cabin with local wood herself. She was also a certified New York State Guide. LaBastille travelled around the world and worked with many organizations to study and alleviate the destructive effects of acid rain on lakes and wildlife. LaBastille has also written five children's books. In 1994, she received the Roger Tory Peterson Award for National Nature Educator and in 1993, she was awarded a Gold Medal from the Society of Woman Geographers. She has an Honorary Doctor of Letters from Ripon College, Wisconsin. Other books by Anne LaBastille include Mama Poc, the Wilderness World of Anne LaBastille and Jaguar Totem. LaBastille is also a noted wildlife photographer and her work has appeared in many nature publications.
