Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. This is a pristine copy from the first printing of the 1989 Random House edition, the one published immediately after they bought Vanguard Press, the small company that originally published this first Seuss book in 1937 after Random House and over a dozen other publishers had rejected it. This copy has been in my possession since it was published while I was working for Random House, and has been stored in climate-controlled and low-light conditions since. It's of much better quality than the original (jacketed) Vanguard edition, and the 1964 book club edition. The book was taken out of print in 2021 after Seuss Enterprises determined one small drawing in the book was offensive. Please see my photos of the book and feel free to contact me with questions.

First book for children from Dr. Seuss, pen name of Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904 - 1991). First published 1937 by Vanguard Press; this a re-issue of 1964, in conjunction with Grolier Press. Charming story of a boy named Marco, homeward bound after school along Mulberry Street. Street is quiet; Marco dreams up an imaginary parade of people & vehicles to please/impress his father once home. Once home, however, he truthfully reports what he actually saw --- nothing but "a broken-down wagon drawn by a horse"! Analyses suggest the street was likely that in Geisel's gentle hometown of Springfield, MA in the 1930's. Perhaps w/deep philosophical innuendos. Unpaginated pages with delightful illustrations.

Included is Dr. Seuss' very first children's story, "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street," which is pulled from publication because it has outdated portrayals of Asian people. These include descriptions of a character described as Chinese as having slanted eyes, eating bowls of rice, and wearing conical hats. It also captions an illustration of a man as "a Chinese man who eats with sticks." The book, in particular this section, was actually altered in 1978 by Dr. Seuss himself: "I had a gentleman with a pigtail. I colored him yellow and called him a 'Chinaman.' That's the way things were 50 years ago," the late author once said. "In later editions, I refer to him as a 'Chinese man.' I have taken the color out of the gentleman and removed the pigtail and now he looks like an Irishman." First printing of this edition with minor creasing and browning to the edges of dust-jacket. 8¼" - 11½". book.

It is protected under a fresh mylar cover. Please note there is no price on the jacket flaps. The book is sturdy, clean and complete with corners bumped and spine ends crushed. No writing. Very clean with a couple of very light, small fingermarks. This is a lovely copy of an early printing.

(First published 1937) Laminate boards, 275 mm x 210 mm 30 pp. No inscriptions. A fine, fresh copy of this title now in acetate, protective sleeve. 'Dr Seuss' i.e. Theodor Seuss Geisel [1904-1991] is one of the most celebrated children's authors and illustrators of the twentieth century. Although his later works touched on 'political' themes such as environmental and racial equality, this, his first book has no such underlying 'moral' and simply celebrates the power of a child's imagination as the little boy embellishes the sight of a cart and horse in the street accumulating more and more outlandish detail as the tale goes on.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. A very sharp copy of the First Printing in an attractive price clipped 2nd State jacket. Rare! As per the Younger & Hirsch Bibliography this copy was printed by the Duenewald Printing Company and has the other First Printing points as well. 1937 on the title page. No statement of further reprinting. The boy has white shorts on the front cover of the Book. On the front panel of the jacket the shorts are blue indicating a 2nd State jacket. The price on the jacket is not an issue point for the First Printing. A 2" and a 3" tear to the rear panel of the jacket else a clean and attractive example of the scarce First Printing in a very attractive example of the jacket.
