Gräfin von Schmettau (* 28.08.1748 in Berlin, 27.04.1806 in Münster) war mit Hemsterhuis, Goethe, Herder, von Stein, Sprickmann u.v.a.m. befreundet und galt als Pendlerin zwischen Aufklärung und Katholizismus". Ihre beiden Kinder, Marianne und Demetrius Augustinus Gallitzin, erzog und unterrichtete sie selbst, zunächst beeinflusst vom Rousseau'schen Erziehungsideal, später von der eingeführten, epochalen Schulreform von Franz Freiherr von Fürstenberg im Hochstift Münster was man besonders auch in der Erziehung Ihres Sohne Dimitri ablesen kann, der sich als Erwachsener zum Priester weihen ließ und als Missionar nach Nordamerika ging (besonders hier der Fellon Band aus dem Besitz der Familie). Die Sammlung unterstreicht in ihrer Zusammenstellung die Einzigartigkeit der Persönlichkeit der Fürstin von Gallitzin als unabhängige, kosmopolitische Frau, die mit den Geistesgrößen ihrer Zeit in intensivem Kontakt stand, reiste und unkonventionell in Kleidung und Auftreten war. Der niederländische Philosoph und Schriftsteller Frans Hemsterhuis gilt als ihr wichtigster philosophischer Lehrer. Sie war seine Muse, und sie bleib ihm bis an sein Lebensende in einem regen Briefwechsel verbunden.
