Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The Catcher in the Rye is the ultimate novel for disaffected youth, but it's relevant to all ages. The story is told by Holden Caulfield, a seventeen- year-old dropout who has just been kicked out of his fourth school. Throughout, Holden dissects the 'phony' aspects of society, and the 'phonies' themselves- the headmaster whose affability depends on the wealth of the parents, his roommate who scores with girls using sickly-sweet affection.Lazy in style, full of slang and swear words, it's a novel whose interest and appeal comes from its observations rather than its plot intrigues (in conventional terms, there is hardly any plot at all). Salinger's style creates an effect of conversation, it is as though Holden is speaking to you personally, as though you too have seen through the pretences of the American Dream and are growing up unable to see the point of living in, or contributing to, the society around you. A 16-year old American boy tells what life is like for him at home and school, and reveals the workings of his own mind. What does a boy in his teens think and feel about his teachers, parents, friends and acquaintances? Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Grosset & Dunlap became known for producing affordable, mass-market editions of popular books, making literature widely accessible. Their contributions significantly shaped American reading habits in the 20th century. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Cover design: Fritz Wegner (illustrator). 1st Edition. London: Hamish Hamilton, 1951. 1st UK edition. Hard cover; d/j. 252 p. Very Good: small sunfaded strip at top and base of spine and along start of front and back boards; light spotting on top and fore edge; some foxing on edges of first few front and back pages. Front board very slightly bowed with small bump on top edge. Small photo of Salinger on inside front cover; owner's bookplate on page opposite. A lot of details here, but the boards and text are clean, fresh and bright and it is a very sound copy. Good: the dust jacket has wear, some loss and small tears at folds and top and base of spine (see photo), is price clipped but is clean and bright, with the very appealing and attractive cover design by Fritz Wegner. It's no wonder that this is such a classic; Holden Caulfield grabs our attention from the very first sentence and the book takes off from there.
