'And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks' was written in 1945, a full decade before the two authors became famous as leading figures of the Beat Generation, and remained unpublished in complete form until this edition in 2008. It is written in alternating chapters by the two authors, and based upon their involvement in the actual murder case in which one of their friends stabbed another. (The book's title allegedly comes from a news broadcast, heard by Burroughs, about a fire at a circus.) The book is an insight into the lives and literary development of two great writers. It includes an afterword by James Grauerholtz, the executor of the Burroughs Estate, discussing the history of the book and the people involved in the case.
