First Edition
Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. First Edition. First edition. An exceptional copy. ix, [1], 236 pp. Extensive notes, bibliography, and index follow text. Reframes the story of modern Ethiopia around the contributions of the Oromo people and the culturally fluid union of communities that shaped the nation's politics and society. Although the Oromo are the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia, their history has been distorted in order to buttress twentieth-century notions of a homogeneous Ethiopian state. The Other Abyssinians tells the story of the Oromo people's contribution to modern Ethiopia, tracing their experiences from the early nineteenth century onward and detailing the varied interactions of Oromo groups throughout the Ethiopian highlands. Focusing on the historic provinces of Wällo and Shäwa, this well-researched work elucidates the importance of these territories in the creation of Ethiopia and the history of the Oromo. It casts the Oromo as Abyssinians and central in all aspects of modernEthiopian life, while making a case for Ethiopia, a nation without a colonial legacy, as an example of indigenous African identity formation that challenges notions of "tribal" or ethnic identities. Author Brian J. Yates details the cultural practices that integrated the populations of the highlands into the Abyssinian group; in addition, he analyzes the political structures that evolved concurrently. The book, notably, utilizes a community-based framework to underscore the fluidity of modern national identity. All in all, the work offers a close study of Ethiopian modernization policies and illuminates how Africans might have crafted their nations without the legaciesof colonialism.

Add to basketRústica. Condition: Fatigado. Portada, 300 p. - Ilustraciones en blanco y negro intercaladas en el texto. - El libro tiene las cubiertas deslucidas y tiene los cortes un poco manchados. - Bahru Zewde, one of present-day Ethiopia's leading historians, must be thanked for producing the first serious history of his country from the coronation of the reforming emperor Tewodros in 1855 to the Ethiopian Revolution of 1974. The work encompasses the lives of Ethiopia's four last, and most important, monarchs: Tewodros, Yohannes, Menilek and Hayla Sellase, whose reigns, as the author presents them, form an historical continuum. The text is valuable in that it provides an historical overview of virtually the entire area of present-day Ethiopia, with sections on the south of the country, largely ignored by previous historians, as well as on the better-documented Semitic north. . The book, though less than 250 pages in length, is packed with information not readily available elsewhere, and contains valuable new historical insights. There are moreover interesting discussions of how events in one part of the region influenced the situation in others.there are also interesting sections on such topics as Hayla Sellase's ideas of government. .The author does not ignore the more positive features of the occupation. . Bahru's work is the first history of modern Ethiopia to be written by an Ethiopian, and thus provides a new perspective. Though later imprisoned for several years by Ethiopia's post-imperial regime he does not see the Hayla Sellase era, through which he lived as a student, with rosy spectacles.

Add to basketTaschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -This book is an administrative history of Ethiopian modern civil service from 1961 to 2021. The year 1961 is selected because this year forms an important watershed in the administration history of modern civil service since it witnessed a significant structural and functional change in the Ethiopian civil service institutions as the result of the issuance of the Public Services Order No.23/1961. On the other hand in 2021, the Civil Service Commission was re-established as an autonomous federal government organ having its own legal personality and being accountable for the Prime Minister. In this year, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Civil Service Commission not only introduced its ten-year public service sector road-map (2021-2030), but also has issued the revised Federal Employees' Employment, Promotion and Transfer Directive.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 56 pp. Englisch.

Hardcover. Respectively 492, 543, 483, 445, 664p., illustrated with 8 copper-engraved maps, genealogies, and a view, all these in the terminal volume. Ex library, find a "Library of Congress duplicate" stamp impression on each titlepage. Hardbounds in matching 8x5 inch speckled calf boards with red and black labelings gilt; textblocks and folded illustrations are (pace some foxing and toning) uniformly good, textblocks quite sound and square, the eight folded items (only three of which re Africa) in good shape, most blanks present; but the leather is shot. A not-often-resorted-to set evidently left to itself, the casings very powdery, only five separate labels currently intact, the last tome now stripped of spine panel entirely and its front board detached. As is, for recasing or possibly complete divesting of all leather traces to prevent spread of mouldered dust. The first three plates deal with Africa. Folded copperplate engravings from volume 18 are: (1) map of Libya/Egypt, image is 8x12 inches, mild foxing; (2) The Tribe of Koreish, genealogical tree (traces back to Mohammed); (3) map of Mauretania, Numidia, Gaetulia &c, 8x12, mild foxing --thereafter, nothing on Africa; (4) map of Arabia, Petraea and Deserta, 8x12, slight foxing; (5) lineage, Tribes of the naturalized Arabs, being the d escendants of Ishmael, 12x13 inches; (6) lineage, Tribes of Kahtan aka Joktan, 13x14; (7) Ancient Gaul, 8x11, just a touch of foxing; (8) Plan of Ye Famed Temple of Montmorillon both Above and Under Ground with a cut of "The Eight Figures over the Gate of the Temple," just a touch of foxing.
