[Modern Literature] Uncorrected proof copy of the first UK edition. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.397; [3], blank. Publisher's printed grey softcovers in oversized proof-only dust-wrapper. Contents clean, evidence of publisher's label to upper, jacket near fine but for some expected wear to unsupported area at crown. Overall a clean, bright copy. RARE in proof form (no other copy listed, this being the jacketed proof only copy we have seen in over twenty years). Clavell's acclaimed first adventure novel, set in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp for allied troops, was well regarded by the James Bond novelist Ian Fleming. Having evidently read an early copy, Fleming provided a favourable supporting blurb for the publisher [Gilbert D29]. Bibliographer Jon Gilbert's copy, with his pencilled notes and ownership signature. His comprehensive guide to the works of Ian Fleming (2012) won the 16th Breslauer Prize for bibliography.
