3 volumes. First Edition. 8vo, as issued in the printer's original state in drab paper boards, with paper lettering labels on the spines. xvi, 315; 296; 315 pp. A very handsome set, a bit age mellowed, internally sound, some expected light wear to the hinges and some rubbing to the labels. FIRST EDITION, RARE IN ORIGINAL BOARDS. The first edition of a classic of historical fiction. Bulwer's most celebrated work was inspired by his visit to the studio of the Russian painter Karl Bryullov at Rome, where an enormous canvas representing the catastrophe was hung. This is now in the Hermitage, covering much of the wall. "The Last Days of Pompeii is one of the best-documented examples of a novel in the boards and label period for which the earliest bindings were supplied by wholesalers, and not by the publisher. It was a practice at this time, just before publication, to offer trade subscribers a small extra discount on copies in quires. The "Bentley Private List" (1834, back wrapper) gives details for "The Last Days of Pompeii". At the trade subscription on September 24, 1834, five days before publication, the book in quires was offered at 21s. 3d., with the added incentive of 25 copies for the price of 24. 'The total subscription was 729.copies, and every single one of those copies was to be supplied in quires. Consequently, on publication day not a single copy in the publisher's binding crossed a bookshop or library counter; and Bentley-bound copies would only have been issued to supply later orders.' (Carter, "Binding Variants", pp. 33-35). Longmans were the single largest subscriber, taking 200 copies (for the price of 192), amounting to 27% of the total subscription. These copies would have been boarded for publication by Longmans, hence the Longmans' catalogue here. Of the six possible binding variants listed by Carter in "Binding Variants" and "More Binding Variants", this is 'A'. Sadleir 414 (half cloth, boards, labels); Wolff 940 (full cloth, labels).

Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. The Last Days of Pompeii Bulwer-Lytton First Edition, Richard Bentley, London 1834; Bulwer-Lytton's classic novel was inspired by the painting The Last Day of Pompeii by the Russian painter Karl Briullov, which Bulwer-Lytton had seen in Milan. It culminates in the cataclysmic destruction of the city of Pompeii by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. The novel uses its characters to contrast the decadent culture of 1st-century Rome with both older cultures and coming trends. The protagonist, Glaucus, represents the Greeks who have been subordinated by Rome, and his nemesis Arbaces the still older culture of Egypt. Olinthus is the chief representative of the nascent Christian religion, which is presented favourably but not uncritically. The Witch of Vesuvius, though she has no supernatural powers, shows Bulwer-Lytton's interest in the occulta theme which would emerge in his later writing, particularly The Coming Race. - Wikipedia; 12mo, contemporary half-calf with marbled boards, gilt-tooled spine, black title labels; Good condition, Volumes 2 and 3 lacking originally issued half-titles & errata; some pulling and a small tear to the head of vol. 1 spine; bindings tight and square; boards, edges, and joints quite rubbed; vol. 1 front hinge cracked, others sound, ownership signatures dated 1837 to front pastedowns of vols. 1 and 2 and rear pastedown upside down of vol. 3; Sadleir 414, Wolff 940.

Original Cloth. Condition: Fine. First American Edition of Bulwer's hugely successful novel, complete in two duodecimo volumes. xii,[2],9-240; 201,[3],28(publisher's catalogue),[8][further advertisements)pp. Original publisher's peach-colored cloth, printed paper spine labels, contemporary manuscript ex-libris to title pages. Spines a shade lightened, else an exceptionally crisp, clean, well-preserved set, in early American cloth. First published in London the same year, The Last Days of Pompeii, Bulwer's single most successful book, "rapidly achieved classic status and remained a best-seller for the rest of the century; it was translated into at least ten languages (no fewer than sixteen French impressions had been issued by 1864), was frequently dramatized, and twice adapted as an opera. Two years after the death of [Walter] Scott, Bulwer's epic tale of Roman indulgence, Christian martyrdom, and the cataclysmic eruption of Vesuvius established him as the most popular historical novelist of the day." (ODNB) The novel was inspired by both Bulwer's visit to the ruins of Pompeii and by Karl Briullov's monumental painting The Last Days of Pompeii, which Bulwer saw when it was exhibited in Milan, in 1828. Walter Scott described the painting as an "epic in colors," and it inspired a poem by Pushkin. After many years at the Louvre, it is now housed at the State Russian Museum, in St. Petersburg. N. B.
