Hardcover. Small 4to. Dark green heavily blind-embossed cloth with white lettering. 448pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Very good. Faint edgewear only, with white spine lettering quite rubbed; text block evenly age toned as usual. A tight, clean and remarkably nice first edition of a title one might think identical or similar to Barrett's 1860 campaign biography or its enlarged post-assassination version, but according to Monaghan the "Contents entirely different." Printed on low-quality acidic pulp paper, this title is challenging to find in a condition as nice as this exceptional copy, which is remarkably free of the edge chipping to which it's prone. Original cloth [rubbed at extremities, spine lettering dulled]. Port. frontis of a clean-shaven Lincoln, 'Middleton, Strobridge & Co.' in small lettering. Port. of Hamlin after page 194. 216 pp. Foxed, lacks endpapers, some doodling on blanks. Good+. "Barrett had been a delegate to the Chicago convention, and seems to have been closely associated with Lincoln for several days after its adjournment. Years later he wrote: 'He readily gave such facts as my inquiries invited or suggested.' Nor was Barrett content with the material which he obtained directly from Lincoln. He sought to provide an accurate background, and to this end turned to Filson's history of Kentucky, Judge Scott's gazetteer of Indiana, and to other source books. The result was a commendable work, the first of a long series which was to issue from the pen of this author" [Wessen, Campaign Lives of Abraham Lincoln 1860]. Wessen says the book first issued on June 27 1860, in printed wrappers and, as such, is "excessively rare;" and on July 2 in cloth with, as usual [and as here], the second state of Lincoln's portrait. FIRST EDITION. Monaghan 20. Wessen 10. Miles 396. Sabin 3616. Not in Eberstadt, Thomson, Decker.

Condition: Good. Possibly the first full book, or nearly so, biography of Abraham Lincoln! The first of an estimated 15,000 book form biographies of the 16th President, the number of which continues to grow unabated. Lincoln was nominated at the Republican Convention on May 18th, and this book was completed by June 18th, the date given in the preface. It was issued with wrappers on June 27th (an extremely rare artefact), and in this, technically the second state since it has a different binding, a week later, on July 2. The biography, obviously rushed out to meet a sudden demand with Lincoln's nomination, was clearly intended to help the campaign, and clearly that is how this copy was to be used, with a penciled inscription that reads as follows: "Presented to Miss Emma Kirby with the hope that she will use her influence towards the election of Honest Old Abe & her friend Hamlin too. by her friend, LHM." Who Emma Kirby was we haven't been able to ascertain. LHM we think stood for Lizzie Hall Park McCullough, who in 1860 was only 12 years old, the M standing for her married name, and this inscription was written later, with the book somehow returned to her possession. Implicit, whatever the circumstance, was that the recipient had connections, even though whatever her age, as a woman, no vote at the time, and the inscription attests to the book having been actively used as a campaign tool. But we also can't be sure of this, since what was meant by "influence" may have meant something different to the inscriber than it does to us. What we do know, though, is that a later owner of the book, Hall Park McCullough (1878-1966), a successful New York attorney (partner at Davis, Polk), and a founder of Bennington College. He was from a sort of first family of Vermont, as a descendant of not one but two Governors of the Granite State, one from each side of his family no less. 8vo. 20 by 13 cm. 216 pp. Two portrait plates, one, of Lincoln, as the frontis, and the other, of Hamlin, facing the first page of his considerably shorter section. (Plates not counted in pagination. First 8 pages of pagination in Roman numerals, but numbering continues thereafter instead of starting again, as the more common practice.). Heavy wear at spine tips, and moderate edge wear beside of boards. Foxed throughout, as inevitable with the paper used. First Edition. Barrett's Authentic Edition.
