La première partie explique au bibliophile-aspirant la nécessité de faire des choix pour aboutir à la bibliothèque idéale. La seconde partie donne sous forme de petit dictionnaire une liste des auteurs classiques avec leurs goûts pour certains ouvrages. La troisième partie donne une liste des auteurs classiques et leurs écrits les plus réputés, indispensables à la formation d'une belle bibliothèque. La quatrième partie est un mémorial bibliographique qui indique les éditions les plus correctes et les plus belles des meilleurs ouvrages. Enfin, la cinquième partie donne quelques avis utiles et nécessaires pour l'établissement d'une bibliothèque, de la disposition des tablettes, des soins à apporter aux livres, des reliures, de la classification. Le Manuel de Bibliophile de Peignot est une sorte de pendant pragmatique au Manuel du libraire de Brunet. Aujourd'hui somme toute totalement dépassé quant aux indications liées au goût d'une époque qui a fortement changé depuis, il reste néanmoins un outil agréable et très utile pour celui qui souhaite apprendre ce qu'était la bibliophilie de nos pairs (ou pères). Le dijonnais et érudit polygraphe Gabriel Peignot ne pouvait que livrer un ouvrage passionnant à lire. Ce qu'il fit. La reliure qui recouvre notre exemplaire est l'oeuvre du relieur anglais Robert Riviere (1808-1882). Elle doit dater des années 1850/1870. Elle est un parfait exemple de ce que l'on pouvait produire de plus élégant à partir de veau raciné, agrémenté d'une riche dorure parfaitement exécutée. Si le Manuel du Bibliophile de Peignot n'est pas rare à la vente aujourd'hui. Les exemplaires médiocrement reliés et médiocrement conservés se tirent la part du lion. Notre exemplaire est l'un des plus beaux que nous ayons eu l'occasion de voir. Exemplaire de choix pour qui sait ce que bel exemplaire veut dire.
