"Clifford Merrill Drury had a noteworthy career as a pastor, seminary professor, historian, and Navy chaplain. Born on November 7, 1897 in Clinton, Iowa, to William Drury and Charity Mae Dell, Drury was a graduate of Buena Vista College and San Francisco Theological Seminary and earned a PhD from the University of Edinburgh. As a pastor, Drury served in Shanghai, China, and Moscow, Idaho. While in Moscow, Drury's proximity to the Nez Perce Indians sparked an interest in the history of early missionaries in the Pacific Northwest. This interest launched a writing career that culminated in twenty-five books and numerous magazine articles. " (from Archives West).

Gentle wear to the extremities of a price clipped jacket. Biography of the Oregon pioneer by the noted Pacific Northwest scholar. Marcus Whitman (1802-1847) was a doctor and Protestant missionary to the Cayuse Nation near present-day Walla Walla, WA. After rising tensions and miscommunications, he, along with his wife Narcissa and 11 other adult men, were killed at the mission by a small group of Cayuse men. His death directly led to the annexation of the Oregon Country by the United States and the colonization of the Native people of the Columbia Plateau.
