Unbound. Condition: Very Good. A small archive including a letter, newspaper article, and map pertaining sent to photographer W.H. Gray from physician Alois P. Swoboda in 1928. All items very good with some toning and edgewear. A small collection of ephemera pertaining to a loan taken out by Swoboda for a mining experiment. W.H. Gray, a photographer from Pennsylvania invested in a Swoboda scheme pertaining to the mining of minerals and oil. This letter from Swoboda explains his theories for why the investment hasn't yielded anything yet. He writes, "I wish to say that due to the fact that the Mineral Veins proposition is being arranged to be bigger and broader than originally planned, the Company has not paid back the money advanced to it as a loan." He continues, "I have been in a position to enable Swobodians to convert the money they have put into this Loan and Bonus matter into treasury shares.I believe the MIneral Veins shares will be one dollar per share within the next year." With the letter Swoboda includes a survey of the mineral veins and a newspaper article about the veins. Swodoba was a self described physician who used mail-order systems to sell his various health regiments including the "System of Physiological Exercise", "Swoboda's System" and "Conscious Evolution." A 1916 article in the Journal of American Medical Association reads, "the case against the so-called Swoboda System may be summed up by saying that "Conscious Evolution" is a meaningless phrase whose apparent use is to obtain money by misleading and deceiving the public, that the Swoboda exercises are new or original; that the entire Swoboda scheme is quackery of the "physical culture" type." A modest but interesting collection following one of the schemes of a "quack physician" in the 1920s.
