A FIRST EDITION, First Printing, from 1944, it would go on to be named a Caldecott Honor Book the following year. In 87 pages, this 12mo (6.5" c 7.5") has green cloth over boards, stamped in very faded gilt to front/gilt lettering (nearly completely faded) to spine. Condition is Good: generally quite clean, with mild spotting & smudging from previous readers. Sewn binding is secure, but a tad shaken. Pages moderately tanned but unmarked save for evidence of erased pencil to rear free endpaper. Moderate soil to exterior, mild rubbing to extremities, with slight bumping to corners & both ends of spine. NO DJ (missing). Seventy-seven verse chosen and illustrated by Tudor in one of her early efforts for Oxford. Book is fine and unmarked. Jacket panels have clean splits at the edges of the spines and have been reattached with archival tissue internally, with the loss of three small spine chips. Both panels are whole and clean, with slight tanning areas at edges, but overall, the jacket is presentable, still attractive, and protected by a Brodart plastic covering the dust jacket.
