Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Books are still among the most important cultural achievements of humanity. Their invention was as important as the Internet: for the first time, a mass transfer of information became possible. Education, science, research, but also entertainment was based on a new revolutionary basis. Books are changing society until today. The technical possibilities of mass printing led to a radical increase in titles in the 18th and 19th centuries. Nevertheless, the conditions were still very different than today: Who wrote a book at that time, often wrote a life's work. This is reflected in the high quality of old books.Unfortunately, books age. Paper is not made for eternity. Therefore, we have made it our mission to preserve the book of knowledge of humanity and to make old books available in high quality at low prices.

Cloth. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. First Edition. 1st UK Edition: xx, 411pages, illustrated, with 98 illustrations by the author and two folding maps. Original black/brown cloth, gilt vignette of man, sled and dogs to front cover. The account of the second unsuccessful attempt by Peary, in 1906, to reach the North Pole. He was forced to turn back 175 miles from his destination. He passed Ellesmere Land to Cape Sheridan and the Arctic Basin, returning along the coast of Greenland. In this, his second to last expedition he claimed to have reached 87º06', the farthest north any had yet been. Arctic Biblio,13226. Ricks p. 169. Peary made several expeditions attempting to reach the North Pole. In this, his 1906 expedition, he reached latitude 87degrees 06minutes N, about 175 miles from the Pole, the closest to the Pole yet achieved. While ostensibly failures, these expeditions allowed him to test his equipment, dogs and men, honing his skills for what he later (1909) reported to be a successful achievement of the Pole. These 1906 journeys passed Ellesmere Land to Cape Sheridan and the Arctic Basin. He returned to his ship by sledge along the Northern Coast of Greenland. There is appended a report of Peary's explorations in 1898-1902. Whether Peary himself ever reached the North Pole is a subject of some controversy today. Shelfware, bumped, previous owners bookplate to front pastedown, frontispiece and couple of pages cracking at hinge, age toning to pages, contents clean, small tear to one of the two folding maps.
