Die vorliegende Tafel erschien als No. 1. des 2. Bandes des Werkes. Da das Gesamtwerk inkl. der Illustrationen sowohl in Erscheinungsreihenfolge als auch nach Sachgebieten angeordnet werden konnte, trägt die Tafel zugleich die Nummer XXIII der Rubrik: Vierfüßige Thiere. - Wir haben einige hundert Tafeln des Werkes vorrätig, sie sind sämtliche generell in sehr gutem Zustand. Dennoch können hin und wieder etwas Textabklatsch oder Bräunungen vorkommen - wo dies der Fall ist, sollte es in der Regel auf den Abbildungen, die wir zu allen Tafeln bereitstellen, erkennbar sein. Blattgröße: 24,5 x 19,5 cm. Dargestellt sind: Das wilde Pferd - Das zahme Pferd - Der Dshiggetai - Der Onager. " Der Dshiggtai oder der wilde Halbesel, ist eine Mittelgattung zwischen Pferd und Esel, und macht gleichsam den Uebergang von dem Einen zum Andern. Er hat Schwanz und Ohren vom Esel, gleicht an Gestalt und Größe ziemlich dem Maulthiere und ist lichtgelb braun von Farbe. Er lebt wild in großen Heerden in den weiten kräuterreichen Ebenen der Mongoley, daher auch sein Name Mongolisch ist. Er übertrifft an Schnelligkeit Alles, was man sich denken kann, ist aber nicht zahm zu machen. Die Mongolen und Tungusen schießen ihn als Wildpret, und halten sein Fleich für eine Leckerspeise.". Not all have the engraver's name printed beneath the image but 8 are signed by N. C. Goodnight and one by J. Newton. others being part of a series one can assume are by the same artist. The plates measure 11 x 8 1/8 inches. Undated I assume them to have been produced around 1780. Condition: Near Fine. There is some light foxing across the surface of all but one of the images and faint browning at the edges. Also a few very superficial marks on the surface.
