La pauvreté de sa famille l'oblige à commencer à travailler à l'âge de 12 ans. Son père est mis en prison pour dettes. Il re-fréquente une école privée, pendant trois ans (la situation familiale s'est améliorée). Il commence à écrire en 1833, des histoires et des feuilletons pour les journaux. C'est d'ailleurs ainsi que naissent la plupart de ses oeuvres. Très bon état.
