  • Seller image for House of the Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne, All Star Series #44, Published by Arthur Westbrook, Cleveland, circa 1920. Scarce Early Series Paperback, Trade Paperback Format with Anachronistic Cover Illustration for sale by Brothertown Books

Soft cover. Condition: Good. Classic authors from the past have been subjected to all kinds of indignities by publishers especially those reprint publishers who specialized in cheap paperback reprints in what seems to be a gazillion series titles. Here we have Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The House of the Seven Gables" issued in "The All-Star Series", published by Arthur Westbrook in Cleveland, Ohio. Westbrook had purchased the plates of the Beadle Publishing Company, and thus was the last gasp, as it was, of the Beadle Dime empire. ****************************************** Here "The House of the 7 Gables" (as Westbrook titled it on the cover) is dressed up in 'modern' attire - on the cover a mother and her little boy share the pleasures of a newspaper (likely the then flourishing comics section). She is a 'thoroughly modern Millie' with hairdo and lounging robe of the time (she looks like a Flapper) certainly nothing ever envisioned by Hawthorne. The small type-face on the pages inside is wretched - one can tell that they have been used over and over, and the print job was one of the worst. But we must take these things as a given of the genre. All the same, this sort of publication catered to a large audience, but such publications were also treated with disdain, and untold millions of such pulpy books ended in the dumps of America - or the country's furnaces, and thus we celebrate the discovery of any such remaining copies, especially if they are in such complete condition as is this specimen. ************************************** SERIES : The All-Star Series #44 [According to the "Dime Novel Companion: A Source Book", the All Star Series, No. 1 - 100 was published from 1917 - 1934. / TITLE : The House of Seven Gables (On front cover : The House of 7 Gables) / AUTHOR : Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804 - 1864) / IMPRINT : Arthur Westbrook Company / PLACE : Cleveland, Ohio / YEAR : [No date, but circa 1920 - judging from the cover picture] / EDITION : Reprint. Printing data is not able to be determined. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION : This is a previously owned book. Series paperback in digest size; 190 pages; approximately 5 1/8" x 7", color-pictorial wraps, stapled and glued. On the front a softly-colored picture of a mother and child reading a newspaper; on the rear cover is the publisher's list through title no. 50. A statement at the bottom of the rear cover reads, "The All Star Series books are for sale everywhere, or they may be sent by mail, postage paid, for 15¢ a copy, by the publisher: 7 copies for $1.00. Postage stamps taken the same as money." ********************************************** CONDITION : GOOD ONLY Well-preserved, considering , clean and complete - with the following noted : FRONT : Clean and presentable -- there are small nicks and tears along the edges, and the corner tips are creased. Surface rub is miild. / BACK : A bit of light soiling and spotting - nicking and tears, etc around edges - binding trim of fore-edge offset. / SPINE : Eroded, chipped, creased, and dented / PAGE EDGES : Toned, but clean and unmarked / INTERIOR: Paper is considerably, but unavoidably, toned, else clean and presentable throughout with but small signs of use -- again considering the inexpensive materials used, care must be taken in handling this book / BINDING INTEGRITY : Aside from the fragility inherent in the cover attachment, the binding is solid with no loose or detached leaves. / Fragility of materials used in construction, and public disdain, insure that very few of these old paperbacks surface onto the market in decent condition. This edition of "The House of the Seven Gables" is rare on the market. You are likely to be hard-pressed finding another copy. According to World Catalog (OCLC), only three libraries world-wide have cataloged this edition.
