I should prefer not to express any feeling or preference as to the photo of the dead buffalo; you are entirely within your rights to do as you choose. The other photos of course are simply like various photos you have already taken. I look forward eagerly to seeing your work; it must be really noteworthy. With all good wishes. Very sincerely yours, Theodore Roosevelt". Statesman, soldier, conservationist, and author, Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) remains one of the most influential and popular presidents in United States history. Roosevelt entered political life as Assistant Secretary of the Navy before earning renown as the leader of the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War at the end of the nineteenth century. He then served as Governor of New York, a position that helped burnish his reputation before serving as Vice President during the William McKinley administration. After McKinley's assassination just two years into his Presidency, Roosevelt became president, before winning the 1904 election outright. He championed anti-trust policies and ushered in a new era of conservation by establishing the United States Forest Service in 1905 and securing the protection of large swaths of U.S. lands by creating national parks, monuments, and reserves. His foreign policy work is highlighted by the U.S.'s role in creating the Panama Canal, although allegations of corruption and other malpractices tinge Roosevelt's role. Despite these allegations and an imperialist perspective on foreign policy, Roosevelt remains one of the most admired U.S. public figures in history. As an author, he helped create the narrative accounts that would help cement his legacy as one of the most important American civic leaders. "Roosevelt was a passionate hunter. He loved the thrill of tracking and chasing game, the skill in marksmanship, the careful and deliberate recording of his observations about each hunt, the demanding - if smelly - preservation of specimens, and the pleasure of capturing in rich and vibrant language this ephemeral experience so that he could share it with the world" (Theodore Roosevelt Association). "Theodore Roosevelt wrote letters to his children during his absences from them, often illustrated with pencil drawings and sketches. Selected letters were collected and published in 1919 as Theodore Roosevelt's Letters to His Children. In his introduction, editor Joseph Bucklin Bishop notes that Roosevelt never spoke down to his children in his letters. As they grew, he discussed more serious topics in his letters to them and helped guide them through school and career decisions, but they were first and foremost always his equals" (Roosevelt Center). Bishop approached Roosevelt during his 1918 hospitalization with the heartwarming project. Laid into this copy is a letter to Arthur Vaux Venner Radclyffe Dugmore (18701955). Dugmore was a naturalist, author, and artist, best known for his wildlife photography. Near Fine.
