Add to basketHard Cover. Dust Jacket Condition: Dust Jacket. First Edition. First UK Edition. Publisher's blue boards with gilt lettering to the spine. With 8 black & white illustrations. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR (IVAR BRYCE). This is the rarest biography of Ian Fleming. Some foxing to the early and late pages of the book otherwise a VG copy the fine photographic dustwrapper priced £3.50 to the inside flap. Inscribed by the Author to the half-title page: "For Robbie/ who created Xanadu,/ & is consequently responsible/ for a thousand happy/ days!/ Ivar". The book was withdrawn after publication as it was the subject of a high court action brought by film producer Kevin McClory against the author, Ivar Bryce and the publisher. The major withdrawn passages are on page 130 and 131 where Bryce infers that the settlement of the litigation for infringement of copyright over Thunderball was dictated solely by the health of Ian Fleming and secondly that Whittingham had been bribed by McClory to give evidence for him. The High Court litigation between Kevin McClory and Ivar Bryce (and his publishers, Weidenfeld and Nicolson) over "disgraceful allegations" resulted in substantial libel damages. Ian Fleming: The Bibliography page 596. A very rare book especially with these attributes. Photographs/scans available upon request. Signed by Author.

Add to basket[Biography] FIRST EDITION, ADVANCE REVIEW COPY. Octavo (22 x 14cm), pp.142. With a suite of eight black and white illustrations. Publisher's blue cloth binding with gilt titles to spine. With the photographic dust-jacket, priced at £3.50. A crisp, fine copy (many went to libraries). To be published on 6th November 1975, with W & N review slip tucked in, together with a contemporary news clipping (1978) announcing the award of libel damages to producer Kevin McClory, over 'disgraceful allegations' about him in a book [this book] about the late Ian Fleming. Fleming lore as written by Ivar Bryce, his closest friend, who was like a brother to the James Bond author. The book gained notoriety when film producer McClory, who was painted in an unfavourable light, successfully sued Bryce and his publisher Weidenfeld & Nicolson. Following the High Court hearing, McClory's counsel Leon Brittan QC, stated that the 'allegations [within] are totally devoid of any foundation whatsoever'. Bryce and the publisher apologised publicly, withdrew the allegations, and recalled remaining copies from bookstores. The offending passages and some photos were removed, and a revised edition followed in 1984. McClory continued to explore James Bond film projects based on Thunderball, culminating with Never say Never in 1983. Brittan moved into politics, becoming the youngest British Home Secretary since Winston Churchill, and was knighted in 1989. Ian Fleming The Bibliography, p.596.

Add to basketFirst edition of the scarcest biography of Ian Fleming, written by Ivar Bryce, Fleming's close friend and a fellow former intelligence officer. The work was withdrawn after publication for libel, following a suit by the film producer Kevin McClory, protesting Bryce's claim that McClory bribed Jack Whittingham to give evidence for him during the litigation case for the copyright of Thunderball. The High Court found in McClory's favour, and the publishers incurred substantial libel damages. A thoroughly revised version, with all offending passages removed, appeared in 1984. Octavo. With 14 half-tone illustrations on 4 plates. Original blue cloth, gilt-lettered spine. With dust jacket. Bookseller's ticket on front pastedown (Juta's, Cape Town), dark staining at foot of spine and boards, one corner bumped, contents clean; jacket with a few nicks and chips, old tape repair to verso of back flap, touch of staining at foot of back panel: a very good copy in a good jacket.
