Chinnery, in the Inner-Temple Lane, 1748, First Edition. 440 p + Index, modern half-leather binding measuring 13 x 8.5 , 4to. In fair condition. Fine modern binding lightly rubbed at edges & corners. Original end papers severely chipped and toned. N.B… several of the Cases in this Book are in the Reports of Lord Raymonds written on front flyleaf in old-hand ink. Title page chipped as well along edges with age-soiling and a few instances of finger soiling. Finger soiling present through the text-block as well. Old hand ownership dated 179(?) and 1807 on title page. Text block normally toned with minimal foxing. General wear to leaves from use. Binding tight and intact. A solid book! Please see photos. Sir John Fortescue (1670 1746) served as Baron of the Exchequer, Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, and sat on the King's Bench. He was admitted to the Middle Temple in 1688 and called to bar in 1695. He married in 1707 and transferred to the Inner Temple in 1712. Partially on account of his noble bloodline, his political ascension was rapid. In 1715 he became not only the King's council, but also the solicitor general to both the King and the Prince of Wales. He became Baron of the exchequer in 1717 and was knighted in the same year. However, his political fortunes waned after he took the King's side in a dispute between the monarch and his heir. Although this earned him the King's favor and a seat on the King's Bench, he lost favor with the Prince of Wales. When George II ascended to the throne, he was the only judge who was not reappointed. It took over a full year for him to become a justice of common pleas. His Reports of Select Cases in All the Courts of Westminster Hall reveal his interest in logic and mathematics and his preference for scholarly work over politics. Compared to his contemporaries, they are well prepared and meticulously written. It is most likely that Fortescue himself prepared them before his death, although his work was not published until 1748, two years after his death. FIRST EDITION. Finely Rebound. Gift quality.
