From the introduction: "This catalogue is the third in a series of catalogues of books in the Bristol Reference Library. The two previous works have dealt with Early Printed English Books 1499-1640 and Foreign Books 1473-1700 and so this catalogue completes the work of presenting a printed list of all the books in the Bristol Reference Library published up to and including the year 1700. The period covered by this catalogue is a relatively short one but these six decades saw the Civil War, the Common wealth, the Restoration, the Duke of Monmouth's rising, the fall of James II and the so-called Popish plot. Inevitably they also saw the conflict between authority and the individual, and the realisation that the printing press offered an opportunity for the widespread circulation of unorthodox opinions was met by the introduction and attempted enforcement of the Licensing Acts which were designed to enable the government to keep a tight control on the output of the printing presses. The Licensing Act finally lapsed in 1695 and so it is not until after this date that we see the establishment of permanent printing presses in the majority of our provincial cities. Printing had, however, been carried out quite extensively before this date at many of the centres involved in the Civil War and it was from these mobile presses in these centres that many of the Civil War tracts came.
