First edition, number 611 of 1,000 copies, of "the first of the Golden Cockerel volumes of Lawrence's 'literary remains' to be published after his death" (O'Brien). Volume I reproduces the thesis Lawrence wrote as an undergraduate at Oxford University in 1910, having gathered much of the material on a solitary walking trek in the Near East in the summer of 1909. Volume II contains his letters on military architecture (accompanied by his drawings and photographs) written to his mother during his travels and research in England, Wales, France, Syria, and Palestine. Original red half morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, gilt-lettered direct, light brown buckram sides, sides and corners ruled in blind, top edges gilt, others uncut.
