First edition, number 611 of 1,000 copies, of "the first of the Golden Cockerel volumes of Lawrence's 'literary remains' to be published after his death" (O'Brien). Volume I reproduces the thesis Lawrence wrote as an undergraduate at Oxford University in 1910, having gathered much of the material on a solitary walking trek in the Near East in the summer of 1909. Volume II contains his letters on military architecture (accompanied by his drawings and photographs) written to his mother during his travels and research in England, Wales, France, Syria, and Palestine. Bibliography of the Golden Cockerel Press 112; O'Brien A188 & A189. Two vols, quarto. Original red half morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, gilt-lettered direct, light brown buckram sides, sides and corners ruled in blind, top edges gilt, others uncut. Half-tone photographic frontispiece of the young Lawrence and his brothers in vol. II, 2 folding maps printed in red and black in linen-lined pocket loosely inserted at rear of vol. I, numerous illustrations, maps, and charts (one in colour); title pages printed in red. Modern colour bookplate of one Michael Scott; clipped bookseller's description pasted on rear free endpaper of vol. I. Spines and rear cover of vol.
