CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The 1st Ohio Cavalry Regiment was organized at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio August 17-October 30, 1861, and mustered in for a three-year enlistment under the command of Colonel Owen P. Ransom. Companies A and C were the first to organize and were ordered to western Virginia September 17, 1861. These companies fought in the East, included engagements at Battle of Winchester, Battle of Cedar Mountain, Pope's Campaign in northern Virginia, Bull Run, Battle of Gettysburg, Emmettsburg, Hagerstown, Falling Waters, Hartwood Church, the Bristoe Campaign, and Mine Run Campaign. In January 1864, the two companies rejoined the regiment as it fought through the Atlanta Campaign. One of the rarest Ohio Regimental Histories, which supplements Curry's work, with a fine, lively account, threaded throughout by a fine journal; seldom offered for sale. REFERENCES: DORN OH #39; Not in NEVINS. Ryan #276: "This volume, compiled from records kept during the war, although its author's name does not appear on the title page, was written by Samuel L. Gillespie, the bugler of the company. It is a creditable history and does not undertake to record any military service except that of Co. A. It forms a good supplementary volume to the History of the First Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, see 'Curry, W L.', and preserves the recollections and adventures of company life as seen by one of its most active members.".
