Boards clean. Top corners sl. bumped. Spine extremities very mildly rubbed. Contents clean and unmarked. The DJ is shelfworn and rubbed at the edges and has small tears at each of the top inner corners adj the spine. There is also a 1cm closed tear at the top edge of the front and two 1-2cm tears at the flap corners at back. Arguably the most contentious book in South African publishing history, the first impression sold out almost instantly in expectation that the book would be suppressed - which it was. Brink relates, in A Fork in the Road, that it made front page news for weeks on end and tells how he was advised by the chief censor of the day to lay charges against his own book! A second edition (very lightly revised) only appeared nine years later under condition that it not be sold to under 18-year olds. An iconic volume and very scarce in this edition.
