Imprint of the Riverside Press, Cambridge, Mass. on the back of the title page, 1891, large 12mo (5 1/2 x 8 in), green cloth with gilt lettering on spine, frontispiece portrait of Joseph Neesima, portrait of A. Hardy, plate with facsimile from Neesima's journal (line drawings and manuscript notes), 350 pp. The two portraits are steel engraved plates protected by tissue guards. The plate with a facsimile is a woodcut engraving. Joseph Hardy Neesima stowed away on a ship to the United States in the 1860s. He studied at Amherst College and subsequently returned to Japan and founded Doshisha University in Kyoto. ~ Condition. The book is in Very Good+ condition. The corners are bumped and the head and foot of the spine are soft. On a front free page there is a manuscript entry stating "No. 35. Lincoln Missionary Library. 1893.
