Thirty six continuous issues bound into one volume, 4to., occasional foxing; small library stamp, a gorgeous copy. Volume 1, number 1, July 1865, published shortly after Lincoln's assassination, contains "WILLIE LINCOLN," by Emily J. Bugbee, a tribute to the President's son Willie, who died in 1862. There are 6 issues for 1865, 12 for 1866, 12 for 1867, and 6 for 1868. The masthead features a boy dressed in a Zouave's uniform, with the quotation: "fighting against wrong, and for the good, the true, and the beautiful - For Boys and Girls." The publication ran from 1865 to 1875. Regular contributors included Horace Greeley, the influential editor and 1872 presidential candidate, whose column "Counsel to Boys" (April 1867) touched upon subjects such as "Self-Trust" (April 1867), "Religion," (May 1867), and "Education" (June 1867). A significant piece of Americana. Seller Inventory # ABE-7046185664
