First edition hardcover (September 1912), sewn-bound in pictorial dark-blue cloth with gilt lettering and decoration on front cover (and an inset color paper portrait of Raphael in oval), gilt lettering and decoration on spine, is in G condition, having corners slightly bumped and worn; slight wear to covers, which on front cover has some light abrasion-wear to the inset portrait of the artist; evidence of some long-ago dampstaining to back cover and spine; gift inscription in black fountain-ink on first free endpaper; faint "ghost" or former bookseller erased pencilings on first free endpaper; normal age-toning to pages. The title page has an invalid roman numeral indicating the date of publication (on copyright page is the correct date of 1912---we believe the publishers were trying to indicate 1912, but erred in their attempt).
