Over 350 b&w illustrations and decorations. 6 full-size colour plates including two-page spread of Hamburg harbour and a colour map of the North Sea. Matching marbled text block edge. Light wear except for bumped lower spine and fading in spots on the upper quarter of the front board. Some foxing to endpapers but text pages clean and unmarked. A beautiful book. A huge and extensively illustrated overview of the late 19th-century maritime world with reviews of naval and mercantile shipping, accounts of the lives of sailors at sea, marine folklore, and much more.
