Masquerier, a free-thinking lawyer, was a disciple of Robert Owen. According to the Gotham Center for New York History, "Masquerier would go on to enjoy a fruitful if erratic later career. In a lengthy and rambling treatise on Sociology, written towards the end of his life in 1877, Masquerier renounced the communism of the early Owenite communities. Celebrating the fact that the ownership of mans body [was] now abolished, Masquerier called for the abolition of additional forms of slavery, and the creation of a political party dedicated to a Land, Labor, Womens Right, and Temperance Movement. First edition, bound in publisher's blind stamped green cloth with gold spine lettering.
