"The Joy Luck Club is a 1989 novel written by Amy Tan. It focuses on four Chinese immigrant families in San Francisco who start a club known as The Joy Luck Club, playing the Chinese game of mahjong for money while feasting on a variety of foods. The book is structured similarly to a mahjong game, with four parts divided into four sections to create sixteen chapters. The three mothers and four daughters (one mother, Suyuan Woo, dies before the novel opens) share stories about their lives in the form of short vignettes. Each part is preceded by a parable relating to the themes within that section. In 1993, the novel was adapted into a feature film directed by Wayne Wang and starring Ming-Na Wen.". Amy Tan, often compared to the Native American writer Louise Erdrich, drew inspiration from Erdrich's "Love Medicine" while forming the basis of her first novel. Tan adhered to the advice of fellow writer Amy Hepel, who encouraged authors to explore uncomfortable themes. A pivotal event solidified Tan's commitment to writing. In a 1989 article by Gayle Feldman, Tan recounted the moment she rushed to the hospital, fearing her mother had suffered a heart attack. Her mother, recognizing Tan's limited knowledge of their Chinese heritage, posed a poignant question: "If I die, what would you remember?" Although her mother ultimately recovered, Tan vowed to learn everything about her Chinese roots. The dedication in her book reflects this promise. Tan described her writing process as magical. She would light incense, play specific music, and immerse herself in an alternate world. Hours would slip away as she conjured characters and their stories. Word of mouth, critical acclaim, and the support of independent bookstores propelled this genuine modern classic to its well-deserved status. Tan's Chinese name, "Anmei," translates to "a blessing from America." Amy Tan will be on tour in 2024 for her new book, "The Backyard Bird Chronicles" and will be featured in the Portland Arts & Lecture series in 2024/2025. She has stated that her mother was "enormously proud" of "The Joy Luck Club.".

First edition, advance reading copy of Tan's masterpiece. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the title page, "For Larry McMurtry with thanks for the pleasure of your company and your good book. Amy 5 Apr '90." The recipient, Larry McMurtry remains best known for his 1985 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Lonesome Dove which was adapted into a television miniseries that earned 18 Emmy Award nominations. McMurtry was also a prominent book collector and bookseller. In 1970 with two partners, he opened a book store in Georgetown, which he named Booked Up and 1988 he opened another Booked Up in Archer City which became one of the largest antiquarian bookstores in the United States, carrying between 400,000 and 450,000 titles. With the original typed transmittal letter signed by Amy Tan on her letterhead which reads in part: April 5, 1990 Dear Larry, Iād be honored to have my bound galley of THE JOY LUCK CLUB gracing your shelves. I keep thinking about your bookstore and what it contains. It reminded me of a time when I was six years old. I had walked into a sweet shop in Oakland with five cents and hundreds of choices of penny candy. Let me tell you, your bookstore was better than that. I didnāt get chased out after two hours of not being able to decide. And I thank you for the gift of A MYSTIC ROSE: RITES OF THE PRIMITIVE MARRIAGE. Tomorrow I celebrate my 16th wedding anniversary, and now I have the perfect sentiment to give to my husband who has endured living with me for so many years. All best, "Amy."ĀProvenance: From the library of Larry McMurtry with his bookplate which he designed featuring the horseshoe-shaped brand his father and grandfather used on the McMurtry cattle. In very good condition. "Brilliant.
