About this Item

Description:

EXCEPTIONALLY RARE. Complete with intact original embroidered yellow silk binding, gold foil label on front cover, and the original gold silk tassels with hand-painted porcelain bead (slight wear; minor ink marks on 2 pages at rear).Present are all 12 tipped-in hand-colored illustrations (in superb condition). One of only 300 copies issued. [12],44 pages. This work was issued at an unusual time, when China's government was (under the Kuomintang) based in Nanjing. The work's closing paragraph is prophetic: 'Whatever happens in Peking, it must unfailingly raise triumphant above its misfortunes. At the time of our visit it is indeed laid low, smitten by an almost fanatical government which has struck at the 'imperialism' it is said to typify. Its large public buildings are empty, many shops are closed and the streets have a queer air of desertion. Yet with all the insults heaped on Peking during the past eighteen months, the old capital still retains the startling dignity of immortality and lives on serenely conscious of its unchallenged supremacy as the first city of China.'.
