"Issued in one of the most influential American atlases of the 19th century, this interesting map of North Carolina presents the Tar Heel state on the brink of industrialization. The county configuration is nearing its modern completion; and roads, canals and other internal improvements are both depicted on the map and briefly outlined in the accompanying text. Several swamps requiring drainage are shown pictorially in the east and south, while topography is depicted in hachure. Large red flags are planted on the sites of important battles and sieges, and two sets of boundary lines are presented in the southwest; one being labeled "agreeable to the charter." The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is also shown and labeled on Pamlico Sound. Accompanying the map are numerous paragraphs and tables outlining the climate, geography, civic composition and population (by race) of the state. The sheet was engraved by Kneass and issued in the 1822 (first) edition of Carey & Lea's Complete Historical, Chronological, and Geographical American Atlas. This important American publication was issued in six separate editions and three different languages between 1822 and 1827. It was heavily influenced by an earlier European atlas by Emmanuel Las Cases (published under the pseudonym A. Lesage.), which inspired the format of a base map surrounded by blocks of informative text and tables of statistics. Henry Carey, a political economist and the son of prominent publisher Matthew Carey, and his brother-in-law Isaac Lea incorporated this novel theme into their atlas, which focused entirely on the countries of the Western Hemisphere. It was issued at a time of tremendous political change in both North and South America, and the detailed maps accompanied by extensive text provide a unique, often insightful, perspective on the problems and possibilities of the Americas in the first quarter of the 19th century." Sheet Width (in) 22.25 Sheet Height (in) 17.6 Condition Description One ink smudge in the upper right corner of the map, near Norfolk, and faint smudging around the western border of the state. A few small spots in the upper right portion of the sheet (within the neatline) and minor toning visible in the margins. Remains in very good condition, with fine original hand color.
