For hundreds of years the only form of golf literature, excluding personal diaries and letters, was in the form poetry or song. In the earliest days of the golfing societies, such golfing 'lays' were often recited after the convivial club dinner, even put to music and sung. There is an especially nice poem, Epistle to the Captain of the Leven Thistle Golf Club.
